POTSDAM – If anyone expected a letdown from the Potsdam Central football team after suffering its first loss last week at Ogdensburg, they were sorely mistaken.

The Sandstoners blitzed visiting Gouverneur for 30 first-half points on Friday night and cruised to a 44-6 Senior Night victory to close out the Northern Athletic Conference regular season with a 7-1 record.

Potsdam powered for 347 yards rushing on the night, including 114 yards and three touchdown runs by Zac Linsky before halftime before the senior sat out the entire second half

“You never know how kids are going to react after a loss, but we played pretty well tonight. They came out focused and the offensive line did a great job again,” said Potsdam coach Jim Kirka whose team outgained the Wildcats 415-197 in total yardage.

“I told our guys we needed a win going into the playoffs and these seniors really want to win.”

Potsdam will host either Canton or St. Lawrence Central this coming Friday night in the Class A sectional semifinals. Those two team meet today in Brasher Falls.

Last night, Linsky scored on a three-yard run late in the first quarter, on a four-yard run early in the second quarter and on a two-yard run late in the second quarter just after Potsdam quarterback John Coleman hit Josh Adams for a 55-yard touchdown pass over the middle which was tipped by a Wildcat defender before settling into Adams’ arms.

Jesse Bradish took over for Linsky after intermission and finished with 80 rushing yards and a 2-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Gouverneur (3-4) got on the board on a three-yard run by Richard Jesmer and then Potsdam close out the scoring with five minutes left as Justin Hargett carried over from three yards out, set up by several nice runs by Dom Centofanti who finished with 81 yards rushing on 10 carries.

For the Wildcats, quarterback Shane Gould finished 8-for-14 passing for 105 yards, but was intercepted four times – by John Coleman, Will Coleman, Jacob Woods and Hans Kuno. Jacob Moose had a strong night on defense for Potsdam with eight tackles.

Jesmer finished with 72 yards rushing on seven carries for Gouverneur.

“Now it’s a new season and the kids are excited about the playoffs,” said coach Kirka.
